Agreement announced at InnoTrans
Alpha Trains and Wabtec plan long-term framework agreement for coupler overhauls
- Planned framework agreement to secure the long-term overhaul of Dellner coupler systems used in Alpha Trains’ regional passenger trains
- Collaboration to cover technical and commercial coordination for efficient overhaul solutions

Berlin, 23 September 2026 - Alpha Trains and Wabtec have signed an agreement to enter into negotiations on a long-term framework agreement for the overhaul of Dellner couplers used in Alpha Trains’ regional passenger rail fleet. The letter was signed by both companies at InnoTrans, the leading international trade fair for rail and transport technology.
The planned framework agreement is intended to establish a long-term approach to the technical and commercial coordination of coupler overhauls.
It is also expected to enable different Alpha Trains fleets to be incorporated into the agreement, supporting standardized processes, transparent lifecycle planning and greater long-term planning security for both companies regarding the overhaul volumes anticipated in the coming years and decades.
Further Alpha Trains fleets can be added to the agreement over time. This standardises overhaul processes across fleets and gives both companies a reliable basis for planning capacity, spare parts and overhaul volumes over the remaining service life of the vehicles.
Another key element of the planned collaboration is the continuous development of overhaul solutions. This includes the development of suitable substitutes where individual components may become obsolete or unavailable, as well as the systematic incorporation of technical improvements during scheduled overhauls. The overall objective is to ensure that the couplers can be maintained to the highest possible standard throughout the remaining service life of the respective trains.
The parties intend to begin contract negotiations as soon as possible, with the aim of bringing the framework agreement into force by 1 January 2027.
Couplers: a safety-critical interface
Couplers connect vehicles mechanically, pneumatically and electrically, transmit traction and braking forces and, through integrated energy absorption elements, contribute to the crashworthiness of the train. In regional passenger operations they are subject to high mechanical loads and to frequent coupling cycles. Their condition has a direct effect on fleet availability and on reliable services for passengers.

Sustainable lifecycle management for critical rail components
The planned collaboration between Alpha Trains and Wabtec is also intended to support the sustainable long-term operation of regional passenger trains. Through structured overhaul programmes, lifecycle extension measures and proactive obsolescence management, the parties aim to maximise the life of coupler systems and avoid unnecessary component replacement. This approach supports circular use of materials, reduces demand for new components and helps preserve the value and operational capability of existing rolling stock. By keeping existing assets in reliable service for longer, Alpha Trains and Wabtec seek to combine resource-efficient fleet management with high standards of safety, reliability and availability.
