Alpha Trains publishes its first Sustainability Report

  • Clear commitment to sustainability
  • Ground-breaking holistic approach for a robust ESG framework
  • The next milestone in Alpha Trains’ roadmap for sustainability

Luxembourg, 18 June 2020 - Alpha Trains, Continental Europe’s largest leasing company for locomotives and trains, has published its Sustainability Report for 2019/2020. It is the first report of this kind for the Luxembourg headquartered company and one of the first stand-alone sustainability reports of a rolling stock lessor in Continental Europe.

The report describes Alpha Trains’ holistic approach to sustainability which required a change in mindset through implementing a framework branded as a “House of Sustainability”. This brings together, under one roof, the various aspects of Social, Governance, Health & Safety, Quality and Operational Safety, with GRESB and 3rd Party certifications drawing them all together.

By transparently and publicly communicating our Sustainability Targets, Alpha Trains commits itself to achieving a healthier environment alongside better mobility and to creating a symmetric dependency between business financial goals and social responsibility.

“As a leasing company, we are an enabler of modal shift from road to rail, and we play an important role in the overall environmental impact of transport. We want to expand our role as a leading group in the field of corporate responsibility and sustainability and become a sector benchmark company for responsible business. This report underscores our commitment to comprehensive, transparent and pioneering sustainability initiatives,” said Shaun Mills, CEO of the Alpha Trains Group.

The report provides a detailed overview of Alpha Trains’ sustainability work in fields of action such as Certificates, Policies, Green Financing, Risk Management and Materiality Assessment.

A clear objective is to reduce the company’s carbon footprint to zero. With a carbon footprint of 3.898 kg/CO2e* per employee in 2019, Alpha Trains has achieved a reduction of 66 kg/CO2e per employee compared to 2018.

Alpha Trains’ locomotives produce nearly seven times less CO2e than trucks to transport the same amount of goods, and its trains only emit 30% of the CO2e that cars produce.

Since 2016, the rolling stock lessor invested €590m in green assets for which the criteria are defined in its pioneering Green Financing Framework. Alpha Trains’ Green Financing initiatives have been recognised with a Green Bond Award.

* Carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) is the unit of measurement which allows different greenhouse gases to be compared on a like-for-like basis relative to one unit of CO2. CO2e emissions are calculated by multiplying the emissions of each of the six greenhouse gases by its 100-year global warming potential (GWP).
